Email Print. Home Page. Home Cleaning and Repair Tips. Now, to complete the illusion of a full wood casing, take your sandpaper and sand the inside drywall surrounding the window to smooth out any texture.
Prime and paint the casing and inside drywall the same color. The final results will be a window that appears to be completely surrounded by a rich wood casing. Great video. However the current stool is almost 6 inches. Is there a quick solution you might suggest to extend the stool? It looks like you replaced it with a similar piece. Would it not be better to have the casing flush with the window frame edges? Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

Wood counterweighted windows were some of the first window designs that did not require hinges. However, these windows lacked any form of flashing and being made of wood, tended to allow leaks around the frame. Since these windows do not include a mounting fin, the house wrap and tape should extend from the rough opening, over the gap and onto the window frame.
In most instances, removing any trim such as brick molding will make the job easier. Both vinyl and aluminum replacement windows are designed to be installed within the existing frame of an older window. Due to this design, replacement windows generally do not include a mounting fin and are simply attached with screws inside the existing window frame.
As such, new house wrap will not extend to the actual window, but to the original window frame. If the window has brick molding surrounding it, the molding should be removed and the new house wrap installed under it.
Adding house wrap to a home with new construction windows, whether vinyl or aluminum, is very simple. In most circumstances, the nails are gently removed from the nail fin one side at a time and the house wrap is slid underneath.
The order is important, so the bottom should be installed first, then the sides, and lastly the top. The nail fin is then reinstalled and tape is applied over the nails and fin. This section will assume that the exterior facade has been removed and the sheathing on the home is accessible.
As mentioned previously, installing house wrap retroactively requires removal of the exterior facade. This is why this repair is not generally recommended for homes with brick or stucco unless the absence of the house wrap has caused water damage. In this instance, the facade will require replacement anyway.
I want to do this, so I just want to make sure I do it right! Great job! I have been wanting to do this since we moved in 9 years ago. My problem is the stool component on our windows does not extend very far beyond the window opening — only about two inches. I would imagine I would have to replace the stool as well? What do you think? If you are painting, the exposed edges should be covered also, no?
I only had to cover the plywood edges when I stain the boards. The exposed edges of plywood are not attractive. We live in Texas with very high humidity and my sister has had MDF around her windows for 5 years with no problems. If you are concerned I would not use MDF but it would not use plywood for the front of the windows, personally. Thanks for making it look so easy!
Think I am going to add this to a few windows as I go! You could do either! We had our sprayed professionally because it is a new construction but I am going to add to them and I will just paint with a brush before I put them up!
Did you do the window sills also? If so, how did you do it? I have a similar bay window in my dining area and I want to frame them, but I hate the yellow plastic sill that is already there, so I wanted to replace it.
I love how the sill on your bay window wraps all the way around. We have MDF casing on all of our windows and while a less expensive option, we have found that any condensation from temp differences inside and outside have caused almost every single casing to swell and become disfigured.
It could very well be environmental.
