It gets even more problematic if a land level is way higher than the other. For example, you can see this picture of a traditional split-level house located in Portland. As you can see, the walkway here is in the form of a stairway that shortly leads to the front entry. The combination of this part and the messy environment simply creates an uninviting atmosphere. Something like this is not good for the occupants of the house as well as people who want to visit.
All these are enough as a reason to remodel the home exterior design. If you take a look at this next picture, you may be in disbelief that it is the same house with the one shown in the previous image. From the photo, we all know that some significant remodeling can create a huge difference. Here, a more inviting atmosphere is obtainable through the new curving walkway. Although it is still in the form of stairs, the curve design seems to make it more comfortable for the homeowners and the guests to walk past through it.
Besides, there is no messy front yard again because the party who remodel the house also adds a new landscape design. It includes the stone base used as border and support for the walkway and the upper land level. If you notice, a new portico is also there. It becomes a mate that emphasizing the front entry of the house even better. There are also some new decorations added to make the house looks better from the exterior.
Those include new yellow lights and new pergola and flower decorations for the garage doors. Another exterior change that also gives an impact on the interior of the house is the new vaulted roof.
As you may already know, roofing like this can make the inside of our homes feel more spacious and airier. If you have a split-level house with a too-flat entry that often makes people wonder where is the front door, you may want to do a remodeling project to fix the problem.
The question is: what if you are not interested in adding a portico or porch because it looks too traditional for you.
Take a look at the picture of the front view of a split-level house above. It has the same problem as the one we mentioned earlier. As you can see, the house has a large entry with a large transom window above it. You can also see some windows with white frames in the design.
Another thing to notice is the big-sized vertical cladding. To emphasize the front door, the architect added an entry cover instead of creating a new structure of portico or porch. This new addition looks quite simple but is very useful in letting everybody know about the location of the front door.
There are even address numbers added to make everything even clearer. The wall cladding is another part that undergone the remodeling project. If previously it was larger and vertical, now it has smaller wood planks with horizontal positioning.
The design is also quite seamless so that the home exterior gains a more sleek and contemporary look. Lastly, you can see that the door and window frames gain a different color after the remodeling. A black color like this is more suitable for the recent style applied to the home exterior design.
Do you have a split-level house located in a crowded area? If you are facing such a problem right now, you do not need to give up. There is one more solution available. It is to add the extra space that you need vertically. Take a look at this picture of a contemporary split-level house.
It looks ordinary and even a bit messy because of the bad-maintained front landscape. Another thing that you can notice from this picture is that the location of the house seems to be in a rather crowded area. It makes home expansion quite impossible to do.
This next picture shows the exact same house after undergoing a major remodeling. It is clear that it looks different here. Although so, that is not the main thing we want to share with you in this case. If you cannot make the place more spacious because no more lot is available, you should consider the vertical expansion as an option. It is the more important thing that we want you to know from the pictures.
As you can see, after the remodeling project, the contemporary house seems to gain more space on the right side. Besides, there is also a new rooftop deck that the family can use as an alternative living to enjoy the view of the surroundings. With an outdoor area like this, you can even hold a gathering event or even a mini party more conveniently. Re-do the planting beds along your front foundation.
Mulch in and of itself is not a decorative item. It should be used for the benefit of your plants, not in place of them. How about a gorgeous vine to accent that opening and act as an architectural element - see attached images. As for the plantings I see you have two matching shrubs sheared into cube-shapes where the walk meets the front porch. They are calling too much attention to themselves, without justification. Functionally, they are creating a pinch-point making the front entrance look dark, narrow and uninviting.
Remove them, as well as the other plants that flank the walk which just accentuates the narrow, linear shape. Let the lawn come right up to the brick walk, this will make the most of the width of your lot. In the planting beds further out, fill in the empty spaces with perennials so that there aren't big empty areas of mulch. Do not remove or limb up any trees unless necessary. I like the idea of shutters.
Keep the front door style simple. See the attached images for entry ways accented with vines, as well as a set of "before and after" from one of our front yard renovations..
Good luck to you! Gorgeous design. Can you tell us about the house's history? Have you been over to city hall to get copies of plans and permits issued since ? Often that turns up some interesting stories.
I wonder who the architect was. What county are you in, if you don't mind? Houzz is a great resource for ideas. This house has "deferred maintenance" as the saying goes. The cracks in the chimney brick mortar need to be looked at by a professional if you did not have that done during escrow yet.
Maybe earthquake damage? A pressure washer can help clean up the concrete patio and concrete block patio planters. Resist the temptation to turn it on the house- the wood siding won't hold up to serious blasting. Go ahead and get the old shrub roots dug out, it will give you a clear space to work. Planting annuals or tomatoes in just one of the planters might be fun this summer while you deal with the serious work ahead before winter rain and winds. Start by giving the ceiling a coat of fresh white paint, BM decorators white,as well as doors and trim, the bottom of the fireplace needs attention in that it looks dangerous to knees floating like that, I would spray the brass black with high heat spray Thank you for all the suggestions!
To create a prairie style house, what colors would work best on the house? Also, what is the style of this house? I know it's a tri level but I've been told MCM and prairie. Other design ideas to help out the house exterior appeal? I am a fan of symmetry so making the shrubs more symmetrical would make me happy.
The big one is up against the little one which looks odd. And the 3 littles aren't spaced very evenly. Other than that it looks good. I like like the diamond panes. Everything has been updated — flooring, molding, doors, light fixtures, you name it.
More on that later. Lots of space, but admittedly, it goes pretty much unused for most people, right? In the remodeled tri-level, they closed off the formal dining room and added built-ins to make it into a cozy family room, which also opens up into the kitchen on the right. Growing up in a home that has a similar floor plan, can I just tell you how much I love this? Sometimes the ceilings are vaulted, sometimes not. Say what? Like this — complete with drop ceilings and fluorescent lighting.
Or it might look something like this — a bit more updated, but still not open to the family room, like so many of us want in our homes today. So what does the remodeled tri-level look like? What was the breakfast nook in the original tri-level homes, has been turned into a much-needed mudroom. So smart. And the dining room that went missing? Where is it? They closed off the wall where the built-ins were added , and turned it into a perfectly placed little office.
The laundry rooms in these tri-level homes were tucked into the back corner of the house. The original one looks something like this:. And in the updated tri-level, they maximized their space with a stackable washer and dryer and a stylish sink. The other big change in the updated tri-level is upstairs, in the master bedroom and bathroom.
To be fair, they did take the upstairs from four bedrooms to three, but I think the payoff made it worth it. Or perhaps this:. I have contemplated ways that my childhood home could be updated to make use of the formal living areas, but this exceeded anything that I had ever come up with over the years.
Now I want to buy a tri-level and remodel it to sell. Updated Tri-Level. Tri-Level Number Two. Tri-Level Number Three. Did you grow up in a tri-level? Has your childhood home changed over the course of the years? Cannot believe how they re-imagined those spaces. And better, yet, pulled it off so well! Our first house which cost less than our last car was a quad level.
Loved that house but so happy to not have all those steps now. Before moving to Ohio from the southwest, I had never heard of a tri-level. There were many of a similar type split level in my neighborhood growing up, though not quite the same layout here.
